Brakes
What do Brakes do?
Brakes create friction, the resistance needed to slow and stop a BMW or MINI vehicle. There are two types: disc brakes and drum brakes. How both work is fundamentally the same.
The process starts when the brake pedal is pressed. A brake piston or pistons then travel the length of the bore in the master brake cylinder. This pressurizes brake fluid, sending it through a network of brake hoses and lines.
From there, what each system uses to do its job differs. In drum brake systems, brake shoes clamp down on brake drums, and the friction mentioned above results. In disc brake systems, brake rotors fasten to brake calipers with brake pads attached to them, creating the resistance.
How Long do Brakes Last?
How long any brake typically lasts depends on the condition of its many individual parts. Luckily, when they become problematic and need to be replaced, there are signs that'll tell you. They include:
- Lit warnings on the dash
- Pulling sideways when you brake
- Shuddering during braking
- Longer slowdown and stopping times than usual
- Abnormal brake noises
- Grinding sounds
- An uncharacteristically soft or low-feeling brake pedal
- Brake grip that's weaker than usual
The best way to tell when brake parts need changing is to do a brake inspection consisting of brake pedal, fluid, lines, hoses, and assemblies checks, plus a parking brake check. Replace whatever the results call for.
When it's time to order, be sure to buy genuine OEM. The brakes BMW and MINI make are guaranteed compatible with your model.
