Exhaust
Engines create noxious byproducts as they burn fuel. Exhaust systems help remove them. If your BMW or MINI vehicle didn't have one, poisonous fumes would sicken you and your passengers, pollute the environment, and probably run afoul of more than a few emissions standards and laws.
How Does an Exhaust Work?
How an exhaust works is a little like an air filter, or even an oil filter or fuel filter: it traps toxins. They go through a catalytic converter first, where metals like platinum, rhodium, and palladium contain them, splitting their molecules into oxygen and nitrogen. The former flows onward, while the latter remains behind.
Carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons burn up; in the meantime, a muffler and resonator both reduce noise and help make sure air flows as well as it can. An exhaust manifold then sends cleaner gases (a mix of mostly carbon dioxide and water vapor) down an exhaust pipe. When they reach the muffler's tail pipe, they flow out into the air and dissipate.
Signs of a Failing Exhaust
Unfortunately, exhausts aren't permanent. They can start to develop problems. Luckily, the signs of a bad one are easy to spot, well before failure happens. They include Check Engine and other warning lights on the dashboard, worsening fuel efficiency, a rotten-egg smell, and unusual noises coming out of the muffler and exhaust pipe.
You can tell what exhaust parts need to be changed by doing an inspection and reviewing the results. Otherwise, be sure you replace the catalytic converter at every 100,000-mile interval and your muffler and/or resonator at every 2-to-4-year interval.
When it's time to buy what you need, be sure to order genuine OEM. The exhaust systems BMW and MINI produce for their models will fit them, guaranteed. It follows that one your brand makes will be compatible with yours.
