Splash Guards

The underbody of a vehicle can get hit with just about anything, on the road or off -- dirt, mid, rocks, you name it. When enough of that crud builds up, it can quickly rust parts, not to mention scuff a paint job. Worse yet, it can make it tougher for wheels and tires to turn.

They're called splash guards (or, in the case of some SUVs, mud guards or mud flaps). You're probably already familiar with what they are: the barriers on your model's front and rear wheel wells. What they do, you also probably already know: help protect the rocker panels, fenders, and every other part of the undercarriage in between.

There's a lot more to them, though. For one, they're either universal (fitting many BMW and MINI models) or custom-fit (made for a specific model). Secondly, they're made of everything from rubber to rugged, impact-resistant thermoplastic polymers. Third, their finishes can be either textured or smooth (i.e., they can come in chrome, stainless steel, and more). They even come in a variety of colors, sometimes even sporting logos. But best of all, they install in a vehicle's existing mounting holes; little to no drilling is necessary. Plus, cleaning them up is easy -- you just spray them down or take a trip to the car wash.

Unfortunately, no splash guard lasts forever. They can tear or break, especially upon getting into a fender-bender. They can also simply wear out. At either point, you should replace them -- all of them at once, to maintain looks and quality consistency.
